OCTOBER Our congratulations to the Life Sciences and Technologies students for their Master's degree awarded at the EPFL 2009 Dies Academicus (Journée Magistrale)...Our warm congratulations to Peter Beard for his "Polysphères 2009" award delivered by the EPFL student association - the AGEpoly - this award is given each year to some EPFL professors in recognition of their outstanding teaching skills and of their personal investment in the students...Also have a glance at the FLASH internal publication referring to the Honoris Causa Degree awarded to Professor Pascale Cossart, and presented by our Dean Didier Trono
Further to Gisou van der Goot's initiative, the EPFL School of Life Sciences is launching its weekly "Life Sciences Seminars" taking place each Friday at 4 pm in room SV 1717a, followed by drinks & munchies
SEPTEMBER The 'Debiopharm Life Sciences Award' to Dr Lluis Quintana-Murci from the Institut Pasteur in France, for his outstanding innovative research in the emerging field of evolutionary genetics of infection; this 2009 prestigious Prize was devoted to the work of a young investigator in the field of Biology and Immunology of Infection; it has been presented on the occasion of the EPFL School of Life Sciences Inaugural Symposium (LSS09), taking place from September 2 to 4, 2009 with an exceptional ensemble of high-ranking speakers covering a wide range of areas, and in particular those represented at the our School; they are grouped into a multidisciplinary, and very attractive program; the symposium took place from September 2 to 4, 2009
BioNano2009, the 2nd Swiss-Japanese Symposium on Bio-Nanotechnology, chaired by Jeffrey A. Hubbell, director of the Institute of Bioengineering, and co-chaired by Matthias Lutolf, is taking place on September 10-11, 2009 in beautiful medieval Aigle castle. JULY-AUGUST Our Summer Research Scholar Program for undergraduate students, took place from July 6 to August 28, 2009, for the third year, in collaboration with the University of Lausanne Center for Integrative Genomics
JUNE Our School of Life Sciences is considering an expansion of its effort in the area of stem cell biology and bioengineering through the recruitment of junior faculty; to explore this avenue further, the Institute of Bioengineering organized, on June 10, a one-day symposium featuring young scientists at the very forefront of the field, active in areas such as functional genomics and epigenetics of embryonic stem cells (ESC) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, stem cell bioengineering or stem cell-based tissue engineering...Program and Abstracts

Two day scientific workshop on Neuroprosthetics organized in the frame of the EPFL launch of the Center of Neuroprosthetics, encompassing the creation of five or more endowed chairs for which a broad search is currently being advertized - This workshop covered 6 main topics: hearing, vision, spinal cord damage, deep brain stimulation, brain electrodes, and non-invasive brain-computer interaction, each presented by one or several high-profile speakers
